WHAT IS A PRENATAL MASSAGE?

Pregnancy is definitely a stressful time, whether we’ve experienced it ourselves or not, we all know this. Massage therapy during a pregnancy is an amazing addition during prenatal care. This is a great and healthy way to help lessen stress and help with your overall wellbeing. This massage helps get rid of many common discomforts during your pregnancy. These discomforts may include backaches, a stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and swelling.

Also, these massages work to reduce any stress on weight bearing joints, help blood circulation, and help relax any tension , which leads to better sleep and can also help get rid of depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes from the pregnancy.

DURING THE MASSAGE

Soft cushions are used to lessen the extra tension on the lower part of the back and other areas whenever pressure from different techniques are applied. Any additional strain in these areas can lead to preventable back or stomach pain.

During your second trimester you may want to lie on your back instead with a cushion underneath to help elevate. For each person, depending on where you are in your pregnancy, your therapist might use massage techniques like reflexology, Swedish massage or techniques that work with your particular requests.

LESSEN EVERYDAY SYMPTOMS

Getting a massage when you’re pregnant can give you tons of benefits and if you do plan on getting a massage it’s recommended that you talk to your therapist about any symptoms that you work with daily that you want to feel relief on. Some of these symptoms may be:

  1. Headaches: These can be relieved by getting a massage that focuses on your head, neck and shoulders. Also, getting a good amount of stress relief during a massage reduces the likelihood of getting migraines or tension headaches by soothing trigger points.

  2. Muscle tension: This can be caused by having to carry the extra weight of a baby and can be relieved by bringing more blood flow to the tense areas. This also increases the flow of fluids, which gets rid of toxins and waste.

  3. Exhaustion, backaches, leg cramps and swelling: these are all annoying and can be help with various types of massage for pregnant women.

  4. Aches and pains: Being in pain while pregnant is normal and some of these aches and pains of pregnancy are caused by serotonin being released in the body which is relieved during and after the massage.

Although getting a prenatal massage can't guarantee that your baby will sleep throughout the night, it can give you with a better night's sleep during pregnancy and afterwards. Habitual massage therapy will not only help reduce anxiety and discomfort but also enhance relaxation as well. This can eventually lead to better sleep patterns.
